A lot of people spend their college years playing a little poker here and there, but few people go on to play the game professionally. Barry Shulman is one who got his start in poker during college, but quit playing after graduation. Instead, he went on to become a successful entrepreneur in liquor, oil and gas, owned a securities firm, was a Registered Investment Advisor, and a real estate developer. He had lofty aspirations of a well-deserved retirement, where he hoped to just play some golf and poker.
However, Barry quickly realized he wasn’t suited for retirement. So, he moved to Las Vegas and doubled-down on his poker past.
As he played recreationally, he anticipated a boom in the game. He cashed in his retirement to purchase Card Player in 1999, where he is currently the Chairman. He is also the CEO of the Shulman Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3) Charitable Trust that has donated well-over $1 million to charities.
In 2001, Barry won a coveted gold bracelet at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) stud eight-or-better tournament, in addition to winning several other tournaments over the years. On October 2, 2009, he won the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, beating Daniel Negreanu heads up for the $1.3 million first place prize. Barry currently has 18 titles, over 150 cashes, and $5 million in earnings despite a very limited playing schedule.
But Barry isn’t the only poker player in his family.
His wife, Allyn, also has a gold bracelet after winning the 2012 Seniors World Championship. The event had over 4,000 players, which at the time was the largest single-day field in history. She is the second female to ever win the tournament, which has historically been dominated by males. Allyn has won over $1 million in earnings.

When the Shulmans built their three-story, rooftop Las Vegas penthouse, they went all in. Allyn wasn’t initially sold on condominium living. “I’m not a condo person,” she confesses, “but when he bought the roof, that did it for me.”
“My wife and I had a vision when we built the penthouse in 2003 — our very own Palace of Versailles come to life, which has been a wonderful home where we’ve made countless memories overlooking the energy and beauty of Las Vegas,” Barry explains.
The poker couple designed a Louis XIV-inspired, three-floor penthouse with a consistent 17th-century France theme, complete with chandeliers, wall sconces, and 18-karat gold detailing throughout. One of the chandeliers came from France and was lovingly put together piece by piece.
The penthouse also has impressive his and her walk-in closets. His closet is paneled with burl birch and features a large armoire with gilded Egyptian feet. Her closet is significantly bigger than his; it’s even larger than most living rooms. The walls are adorned in pink damask fabric with tasseled drapes. Built-in cabinets are faced with full-length mirrors, including opposite cubbies to hold her numerous designer purses.
