It takes a prolific man or woman to design a prolific home. Famed and award-winning architect Alan Wanzenberg was given the challenge of converting the entire third floor of the former Elks Lodge in Telluride, Colorado into a residence.
UP TO THE TASK
Alan Wanzenberg and his award-winning firm, Alan Wanzenberg Architect/Design, have been recognized for design excellence in a wide range of publications, including The New York Times, Elle Decor, World of Interiors, Vogue, and Modernism Magazine. Wanzenberg has been named in the annual Architectural Digest’s “Top 100 Designers and Architects” numerous times.
“We take a lot of spaces [like 300 Elks Park] and repurpose them into something that’s familiar, that speaks to the owner,” Wanzenberg explains, “but also has a high level of detail and resolution that allows for broad enjoyment.”
The original floor plan of the Elk Lodge wasn’t exactly ideal for a residence. A lot of work needed to be done. For example, 14 urinals and a staircase had to be removed from the center of the apartment. Wanzenberg viewed the opportunity as a blank canvas. “It was just a white box. We could turn it into what we wanted to.”
Wanzenberg has an uncanny gift at knowing how to deliver what his client’s need. “I have the ability to imagine myself living in these environments,” he explains. “As I got close to the family that I was working with, I intuited a lot and spoke a lot about the notion of privacy for the owner.”
THE VISION REALIZED
While 300 Elks Park is in the middle of the city, Wanzenberg expertly crafted a space that feels secure. “Design can solve a lot of issues that otherwise create mild but relevant turmoil in families,” he says. Having worked with celebrities and notable figures of the societal elite, Wanzenberg prides himself on designing a space where prominent individuals can truly feel unselfconscious and at home.
For 300 Elks Park, the vision was to bring the 360-degree views into the home. The floors were raised to enhance the views from the windows. Simultaneously, the ceilings were also raised and decorative ceiling beams were outfitted with electrical systems. A section of the roof of the building was cutout to make space for a large central patio. The patio opens up on three sides, allowing light to spill into the home.
The final design features a spacious dining area complete with a country kitchen, stunning great room surrounded by undisturbed mountain views, and four commodious bedrooms. And thanks to building height restrictions, the incredible views are protected.
THE FINAL TOUCHES
No masterful design is complete without the supplement of the highest-quality materials. “We used materials to give it a unity,” Wanzenberg says. One of the most beautiful aspects of the home is where Wanzenberg used limestone flooring reclaimed from castles in Europe. “With the materials we chose, they give a warmth and an intimacy to that space. It feels very intimate.”
