About The Santa Lucia Preserve: A Legendary, Timeless, and Irreplaceable Community

With history dating back thousands of years, the land that makes up The Santa Lucia Preserve has been safely ushered through the centuries. These 20,000 private acres are nestled in the Santa Lucia foothills and, at over 31 square miles, are larger than the entire Monterey Peninsula.

18,000 acres of permanent nature preserve protects wildlife habitats in perpetuity. Of this preserve, 12,000 acres of the richest natural resources, the Wildlands, are owned by the Santa Lucia Conservancy, and 6,000 acres, the Openlands, are privately owned and under the management of the Conservancy through conservation easement.

The remaining 2,000 acres of The Santa Lucia Preserve include carefully sited envelopes for residences, recreation, and community services. These acres include a Preserve Community of never more than 300 residents, the 250 acre, 18 hole, Preserve Golf Club, over 100 miles of hiking and riding trails, and a private 500 acre Ranch Club, centered around the historic Hacienda.

The Ranch Club

The Ranch Club embraces an authentically restored 1920s Hacienda and Ranch Guest House, continuing the legacy of ranch style hospitality in 16 comfortable guest accommodations, a great room, the casual elegance of the dining rooms and a madrone shaded patio. Take a stroll through the gardens, or find quiet retreat poolside at the Hacienda swimming pool.

The recreational and natural opportunities flow outward from the Hacienda, just across Garzas Creek, to the Sports Center complex with seasonal grass tennis courts, croquet, horseshoes, bocce, playground, a complete fitness facility and the Polo Pools, renovated from the horseshoe shaped Polo Barns. Beyond the Polo Pools, celebrations take on a flavor of early California in the 75-year old restored Old Barn with its antique bar, dance floor, and rustic charm. Then in just a few more steps, you will find the Equestrian Center with stables, two training arenas, 60 foot round pen, exercise track, and turnout pastures. Beyond the boundary of the Equestrian facility, enjoy fishing, canoeing or a picnic at Moore’s 18-acre Lake.

The Preserve Golf Club

Meandering through ancient oaks, rolling meadows, ponds, and streams, Tom Fazio, one of today’s foremost golf architects, designed the championship course against the dramatic backdrop of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Each hole was meticulously planned to be distinctive, as well as memorable for its own personality, constantly adapting to the natural environment by enhancing rather than detracting from it. “It’s as if you are going on a grand hike and happen to have a golf club in your hand,” said Tom Fazio.

Among the landmark oaks on a knoll overlooking the first tee and the eighteenth green, the 20,000 sq. ft. Clubhouse is the place to begin and end each unforgettable golfing experience. Membership is limited to only 300 equity members, ensuring enjoyment of the inspiration of the course as well as the Club amenities that include a 5 acre practice range, equally appointed men’s and ladies locker rooms and lounges with steam, jacuzzi, and private massage treatment rooms, our signature Pro Shop, casual dining indoors or out on the patio, as well as the Clubhouse lounge and library.

Traditions and Gatherings

The Santa Lucia Preserve celebrates the Vaquero traditions of horsemanship, craftsmanship and style in one of many annual traditions, at The Fandango extravaganza. Members gather with family and friends in the spirit of appreciation at the end of the year at A Holiday Affair. The majestic Redwood Grove provides a venue of grandeur for annual musical events and BBQ’s as well as hosts one of the most magical wedding locations in California. The Stocker Cup, Ladies Round-up and Men’s Boar Hunt, are among just a few of the Preserve’s golfing traditions. Whether celebrating a holiday, family reunion, or simply relishing in the season, members enjoy all of the events and gatherings in the traditional spirit of community with a respect of the history and the mission, vision, and values of The Preserve.
